Legendary shoe designer Steve Madden has given his first Australian television interview as the brand relaunches into Australia this month with the opening of two new retail stores and a dedicated Australian online shopping platform. Speaking to Studio 10, Steve Madden, who founded the global footwear brand in 1990, said he was excited to open Steve Madden branded stores at Highpoint Shopping Centre, Melbourne, on December 8; and Robina Town Centre, Gold Coast, on December 15, 2018.

“The Australians are making such a big mark in fashion in America. Everywhere you go all you hear about is this Australian line and that Australian line,” he said.

From a factory in Queens, NY, Steve Madden has revolutionised the shoe industry, merging years of experience with unique and creative designs. Today, the business he started with just $1100 almost three decades ago is worth billions. “I’ve been making shoes since high school. I went to work in a shoe store as a kid,” he said.

“I had a lot of great people that I worked with and I had a lot of energy in those days and one thing led to another. I seemed to discover a customer base that wasn’t being taken care of,” he added.

Inspired by rock and roll and his New York roots, Steve’s vision to provide on-trend women and men with an outlet to express their individuality is innovative, daring and inspiring. Yet, the creative designer and founder doesn’t pretend to know what every woman wants.

“If I knew what women wanted, I wouldn’t have gotten divorced. We seem to have a knack for making shoes that girls like to buy,” he said.

“I don’t think you can ever have enough shoes.”

Considered the fashion footwear mogul of the 21st century, Steve has an innate understanding of trends and unparalleled willpower that has resulted in millions of customers worldwide and propelled his designs to the forefront of fashion. Many also know him as the man portrayed in the hit film The Wolf of Wall Street.   “It was very strange to relive that moment,” he said about watching the film. “I am very grateful for where I am today and the path that led me to where I am today.”

Today, Steve Madden has expended the brand into a true lifestyle and destination for footwear, handbags and accessories, sold in more than 80 countries worldwide. He most recently was featured in the Netflix documentary, Maddman: The Steve Madden Story.
